1. Think-Pair-Share (textbook)
- Key to collaborative activity, learning how to work tighter as citizens and scientists.
2. Visualization
Complex concepts in science can be difficult to grasp from a textbook. Visualization of concepts using models, diagrams, and demonstrations will give students visual context to complex concepts.
3. Cooperative Lab Groups
Key to developing analytical and process skills, use laboratory equipment, and carry out experiments in order to test a hypothesis using the scientific method.
4. Differentiation in Assignments
Provide a varied assortment of assignments to ensure that students of all learning styles can have access to materials that suit their own earning style.
5. Integration of Technology
Technology is an increasingly important factor in the lives of students, and scientists. Technology can be used to model complex concepts that are not possible to recreate in the classroom, and con provide needed context to lessons.
6. Inquiry-based learning
Students benefit greatly from learning to ask questions and develop experiments to verify their hypothesis. By flipping the script, and providing guiding questions to let students take the lead.
7. Project-based learning
Builds into labs and other projects where students can learn to collaborate as scientists and professionals.
8. Scaffolding
Students will require support to grasp complex concepts. Scaffolding, guiding questions, and differentiated instruction help all students succeed.
9. Real-world case study
Biology lends itself to many case studies, from the growth and decline of populations to the impact of industrial chemicals on the environment, real-world case studies can underscore concepts.
10. Integration of current events
Current events such as climate change and the outbreak of epidemics can provide powerful motivators for students to have an interest in science and biology. By providing resources to allow students to understand events, they can become more informed citizens.
11. Classroom Management
A well-run classroom is the best environment for a student to learn. Keeping an orderly classroom will best help me to meet the educational needs of each student.
12. Professional Development
As any teacher should, constantly improving my teaching practice will provide my students with an evolving and ever-relevant educational experience.
